Caltrain projects $5.4 million operating deficit

Caltrain’s initial operating budget for 2008-2009 has an operating deficit of $5.4 million. Although last year Caltrain has collected more revenue from passenger fares than expected, Caltrain also faced rising diesel fuel prices. This year is no exception. In particular, Caltrain is projecting diesel cost at $3 per gallon (because Caltrain pays wholesale prices). Last year, Caltrain projected diesel cost at $2.40 per gallon.

For the last few years, Caltrain’s operating budget started out with a deficit. In some years, other government funding sources were used to close the gap. In other years, fares and parking fees were raised.
